Manga and Anime is ripe with unaware good
girls and deliberately sultry bad women. This
is a short salute to my personal favorite
artists and characters.
Manga (‘comics’
in Japanese) and Anime (‘animation’ in
Japanese) are not just “those cute girls with
big tits and big eyes” (as demonstrated to
the left). Although there’s a lot of that,
and the Japanese are known to let go of all
sexual inhibition, when it comes to their
illustrated entertainment. I believe Manga
and anime are a fine art, with many styles
and agendas. After all, you wouldn’t say all
Western comics are about super heroes, would
you?
Shinobu
We’ll kick off with the more stereotypical
character of Shinobu, from Ninja Nonsense:
The Legend of Shinobu (Ninin ga Shinobuden).
Shinobu definitely fits the description of
the Anime good girl; sporting an extra short,
extra tight pink kimono and gigantic hair
accessories. She also wears suspiciously
uncomfortable thigh-high boots and kitten
gloves. What- other than sweet sex kitten-
can you make of that? Shinobu, of course, is
a little dumb and has no idea what effect she
has on her ninja comrades (all masked men)
and actually has a thing for her best female
friend. The astute viewers of Shinobuden will
notice the farce of this wacky comedy in the
parodying of traditional patriarchal Japan.
Chun Li
As a kid, I hated
playing Street Fighter. Give me Mario,
give me Sonic, but don’t make me battle
off with an animated ninja! Since I have
a big brother, and he was the reason
most video games were brought into the
house, in the first place, I did, in
fact, play a little Street Fighter. And
when I played, my favorite was the big
thighed and daintily hair-styled Chun
Li. Who could resist those little hair
napkins?! (Anyone who knows the name of
these hair cover thingies is welcome to
drop me an email or leave me a comment.)
Chun Li was a bit of a revolution, in the
almost heroineless world of the early 1990’s.
She was the only female Street Fighter,
meaning, she took on all the guys, and of
course, there was the air of exoticness about
her, with her little kimono and
aforementioned hair thingies. Her designers
made sure she was pretty, but her athletic
physic was always emphasized. Especially her
massive thighs, which made her look very
stable. One of my childhood heroes (next to
Polly
Esther ).
Rei Ayanami
Neon Genesis
Evangelion (Shin Seiki Evangerion) is an
emotionally complicated and ruthless
tragedy. It was both an Anime series and
Manga. My favorite character was Rei
Ayanami. A somber and mysterious
teenager, who doesn’t talk much, but
carries heavy emotional baggage.
Rei (like the rest of the teens of Neon
Genesis) are regular kids turned Mecha
pilots. So she alternates between her school
girl uniform and her tight-fitting Mecha
gear, with the metal cat ears. This actually
more along the lines of stereotypical manga
pinups, but I tend to like Rei for never
smiling. Having a maturity about her that her
colleague
doesn’t possess.
Maestro Delphine Eraclea
There are many
memorable
female characters in Last Exile
(Rasuto Eguzairu), but none like Maestro
Delphine Eraclea. Delphine is pure evil.
She has no remorse and sees her
ruthlessness as an inherit natural
birth-right. But what makes Delphine
truly a magnificent Anime pinup, is that
someone took great care with her design:
The white hair, the sci-fi geisha makeup
and clothes, her Princess-of-the-Nile
surroundings, my god!
Aeon Flux
With all due respect
to Charlize Theron, I loved the
animation version of Aeon Flux. The
drawings were fantastical and I could
believe those mythical long legs, as
long as they stayed animated. Aeon is a
complex character, between good and bad
with a killer S&M wardrobe. She’s
both a sexual fantasy and a self
sufficient woman and it shows in her
design.
Sumeragi Natsuki
Moving
on to the outstanding artists. Sumeragi
Natsuki is a manga artist that pays
incredible attention to details. Her
characters are typically set in ancient
China, and she shows off the rich traditions
and culture with her delicate
hand.
Junko Mizuno
Taking
big tits and big eyes to the limit, Junko
Mizuno is an extraordinary creator in the
Manga landscape. She primarily creates
grotesque versions of traditional Western
fairy tales, for adults. In her version of
Cinderella,
for instance, Cinderella leaves her
eyeball behind, instead of her glass
slipper.
Hope you enjoyed my favorite Japanese Manga
and Anime pinups,
