Anarchist Pinups Hit the Streets

Pinup graffiti, cheesecake tattoos and bombshell skateboards is what it’s all about!

It’s true that a pinup is something you pin up, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t side-step the technicalities, here and there. Today we take a look at how pinups are used in T-shirts and graffiti and other less mainstream mediums.

#96 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: The Oriental Pinup Jackpot!

An email sent me an invitation, to see a site that compiles oriental pinups. Off I went and my jaw dropped- I hit the oriental pinup jackpot! Old Orient Museum was lovingly created by digital artist Vincent Lexington Harper. Harper singlehandedly compiled and restored an astonishing amount of pinups of the orient. The site is pleasurably designed and creates a very whole experience, with music, gorgeous graphics and, of course, lovely oriental pinup girls, like this one to the left. It’s so good, I just had to add it to the sidebar! And it’s so good, you have to see it for yourself!

Geisha Pinups - Capturing Western Imagination

Firing up imaginations from the East to the West, The Pinup Blog is proud to present: Geisha Pinups

Geishas have always been shrouded in mystic, in Western eyes. If she was doing her job right, in Japanese eyes, as well:

“Their purpose being to entertain their customer, be it by reciting verse, playing musical instruments, or engaging in light conversation. Geisha engagements may include flirting with men and playful innuendos; however, clients know that nothing more can be expected. In a social style that is uniquely Japanese, men are amused by the illusion of that which is never to be.” ~ Wikipedia

There are hundreds, if not thousand, images of Geishas, all over the internet. Let’s take a look at the trends.

#95 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: I Heart Brooklyn Girls

This one’s for all the ladies out there, who just love their ladies retro. Featuring Brooklyn's queer community, I Love Brooklyn Girls began its sexy way in 2006. This year the Brooklyn bombshells will be poking fun at gender roles with their “professional pinups”. And if that wasn’t enough, these lovely femmes will donate 10% of their proceeds to The Lesbian Herstory Archives. It’s for a good cause, and anyway, you know you want to Winking

For Love of the Pinup!

by Jaime Caudill

Valentine's Day...love and such....I could write about that....but everyone does, so I'm writing about the Love of Pinups.

Much more interesting than talking about, if you're going to get your girlfriend, boyfriend, husband or wife a box of candy or flowers, or something just ridiculous, like a new mop or something. Hell, just buy him/her a pinup and give em some of that extra special lovin' and believe me, they will be happy. In fact, I'm giving my husband a Pinup of none other than myself for Valentine's Day....by Tali Shapiro (You rock, Tali!) ....and he's going to love it.

Lately I have been doing some research for my own website. The subject of my website, of course: Pinups. In the process of researching I have found out so much and learned of countless artists who do pinup work. Pinups are my very favorite type of Art. Give me Gil Elvgren over Leonardo de Vinci anyday. I know a lot of people will disagree, but that's just me and I like what I like and I Love pinups, hence this topic for Valentines day.

So, back to the subject of my research, I have also realized that just about everyone loves pinups....because there are so many different topics pinups can be linked to. Whether you like fashion, cars, motorcycles, vintage art, superheros, sports, cooking, animals, pretty much anything you can think of, there is a pinup website about it or at least a pinup portrait related to your topic of interest. Or, you know what, if you just have a fetish...there is a pinup related to your fetish somewhere. I can find it for you if you don't believe me Winking While I was hard at work researching the topic I love most: Pinups, I came across countless websites that show the diversity of pinups and the broad range of those who love them. There are pinups everywhere! Pinups are taking over the world Happy Everyone Loves pinups!

Nina Mae McKinney - The Black Garbo

Adding another great name to The Pinup Blog’s diverse hall of fame: The first African American movie star, Nina Mae McKinney.

I got a fantastically enthusiastic email from Tia which I’d like to share with all you pinup lovers:

“Hello,

I just wanted to Thank you for pointing out the lack of diversity in the pin-up world. I'm a 25 year old black woman and I've always loved pinups despite the fact none of them shared my race. What I do have in common with them is the glamor, confidence, and most importantly the curves! Also they were sexy without being trashy and in today’s world the two have become synonymous. I believe the pin-ups are are the best celebration of a woman's form and its a shame more people don't appreciate that. Maybe we wouldn't have so many little girls starving themselves and hating what they looked like if they saw more images that were real. Not these size zero, airbrushed fakes. It saddens me that my generation hardly knows about these women besides Marilyn. I respect what you’re doing by educating people and bring attention to the forgotten stars. I've always preferred to watch movies from the 30's,40's and 50's because when it comes to an image the people were more real back then. When I try to share my enthusiasm with peers they don't get it, and they don't want to. Although I'm happy, that  Josephine Baker, Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, and Eartha Kitt receive some recognition it bothers me that people like Nina Mae McKinney, who was the 1st Black movie star, receives no recognition at all! She made her first movie in 1929 and Thirty films over her career, and unlike those other ladies her career was just as successful in the U.S and Europe but she's one of many who's contribution will continue to be overlooked.

Again Thank You for doing your part,if we all continue to honor these women they will never be forgotten!

Tia Sanchez”

Apart from Tia’s beautifully strong words, it struck me that I’ve never heard of said Nina Mae McKinney. So here’s what my research yielded...
