Not exactly cheesecake and not exactly
beefcake, but definitely sexy! It’s time to
feast your eyes on the butch pinup.
Feeling comfortable
in your own skin is the number one
ingredient for sex appeal. Not every
woman feels sexy in heels and lipstick,
and as a result, not every woman
is sexy in
heels and lipstick. This week, The Pinup
Blog takes a look at the diverse and
beautiful butch women, who prefer men’s
shorts over panties, and sideburns over
curlers.
Loads of vintage fun at
Retrospace (newest
addition to the sidebar). Be it music,
television, movies, or those silly ads
from way back when, Retrospace covers it
all. Good humored and very diverse, go
have a look, and enjoy the special
Christmasy surroundings, too!

Molly
Kiely,
author ofDiary
of a Dominatrix,
is an in-your-face underground comics
artist and illustrator. I find her and her
work (in no particular order) fascinating,
cheeky and devilishly sexy. She’s got a
lot to say, so here’s some of it:
Everyone ought to have a colourful past
(and, ideally, a colourful present), and
mine is being an unrepentant pornographer.
I've heard all the criticism about
pornography that there is -- so boring. My
sexually explicit work is not declasse or
moronic, and I maintain that I am a kickass
feminist. In the words of one of my
admirers, my work is "seditious" and
"undermines the paradigm of Lonely Guys
Comic Porn."
And on that note, check her out!

It is hard
to say what exactly
causedthe shift in
the Sci-Fi genre- from an almost
exclusive male interest, to a genre that
has more and more female readers,
writers and watchers. All of a sudden,
it became OK for a girl to like the
genre, and more and more girls started
to take interest. (According to some
polls- 80% of the genre readers are
girls, but I am not sure of their
accuracy). Such a shift has to (and did)
cause a change inside the genre- there
was a whole new crowd to satisfy, but
still keep the older crowd interested.
What does Elvgren’s girl next door have
to do with Masuimi Max’s tattoos? It’s all a
web of pinupology. Watch the evolution as it
happens!
The pinup girl
evolution isn't, a linear one. Like most
genres of art, each school would
interpret it differently, geography
would change the aesthetics, and post
modernism- and much more recently- the
pluralism of the internet would implode
any possibility of linearism. My goal
then, in this article, is not to create
a time line, but to follow the
evolutionary branching out of the rare
and beautiful species-The pinup.
They come in all known genres and
fetishes, the only difference is that you
can’t pin them up. Introducing pinup
sculptures.
Pinups have been named as such, for their
function rather than their content. Today,
however, I think it’s safe to say that pinup
is more than something you… well... pin up.
It’s fashion statement, it’s an aesthetic,
it’s a lifestyle. And now, it’s highly
stylized and glossy sculpture!
Above, you can view the damn fine work of
Mike James. A multi
faceted artist, James does photography and
drawings, as well. His sculptures are an
idealized blend of cute and muscular.
Up for a
fantastically designed online art
gallery full of pulp?! (This is the part
where you go “YES!!!” ) Take a peek at
comics artist, Larry Nadolsky's online
art gallery, Neo Pulp. Full of
skulls, tits and visual mayhem. Or as
Nadolsky puts it:
“Babes & monsters, spaceships, dragons
& hotrods, barbarians with axes, aliens
with spaceguns, gangsters, superheroes &
large flying eyeballs. Oh yeah- throw in a
couple of skulls. Such as it is when you’re
stuck at 15 years old, the time of age when
you say- that’s cool!”

While I have to admit I do love Iron Man
and Batman, there just isn't anything like a
female super hero, saving the day and the
world, all the while looking sexy and
glamorous, long hair blowing in the
wind.
Whether it's
watching them on movies or TV, reading
comics, drawing or painting them, or
dressing up in costume as one of these
gorgeous gals, people of all ages around
the world love Superheroines.
Pinups are sexy and glamorous with all
different types of style and personality.
Some of my favorite pinups are pinups of
characters in movies, games, and comics.
These strong, smart, sexy women make for
lovely pinups and great role models. I have
been excited about superheroine art for the
past few months, finding it in the form of
photos, digital art, paintings, and sketches.
Firing up imaginations from the East to
the West, The Pinup Blog is proud to present:
Geisha Pinups
Geishas have always
been shrouded in mystic, in Western
eyes. If she was doing her job right, in
Japanese eyes, as well:
“Their purpose being to entertain their
customer, be it by reciting verse, playing
musical instruments, or engaging in light
conversation. Geisha engagements may include
flirting with men and playful innuendos;
however, clients know that nothing more can
be expected. In a social style that is
uniquely Japanese, men are amused by the
illusion of that which is never to be.” ~
Wikipedia
There are hundreds, if not thousand, images
of Geishas, all over the internet. Let’s take
a look at the trends.

Joel Herrera is a
fine artist and illustrator from HAPstudios. Though
he does many types of drawing (especially
comics), I find his pinup girls
particularly irresistible.

Ian Glaubinger is a
comics artist. Mostly associated with
Cave Drawing

Manga and Anime is ripe with unaware good
girls and deliberately sultry bad women. This
is a short salute to my personal favorite
artists and characters.
Manga (‘comics’
in Japanese) and Anime (‘animation’ in
Japanese) are not just “those cute girls with
big tits and big eyes” (as demonstrated to
the left). Although there’s a lot of that,
and the Japanese are known to let go of all
sexual inhibition, when it comes to their
illustrated entertainment. I believe Manga
and anime are a fine art, with many styles
and agendas. After all, you wouldn’t say all
Western comics are about super heroes, would
you?
Last week, I posted a whimsical little
anthology about pinups in
sports. I had a few
interesting remarks, on and off-site,
inquiring as to “Where are the real women?” I
didn’t completely understand the nature of
the question, but a thought came to my head:
Unlike Playboy, some readers read this blog
for the pictures. Am I a Porn Blog? Some, I
suppose, think so.
All
this train of thought brings us to today’s
issue:Is the contemporary pinup pornography?
Comic
Vine is an interactive wiki site for
all super hero comics lovers. In
relevance to our pinup dealings, you
might find the Attractive
Female List. This list doesn't just
rank many female comic heroines, but it
let's yo vote, too! Of course, every
image leads to the character's page,
with information, images and covers of
the volumes the character has appeared
in. Other than that, the site has a
blog,
reviews
and updates
when new editions come out.

Visual artists can’t hide behind their
work, at some point, some one will notice, a
fetish, a habit a quirk. Missing belly
buttons, fake breasts, detached heads- This
is a list of the 10 most fucked up pinups in
classic cheesecake history.
No disrespect
to these wonderful artists- as an artist
myself- I know how much it sucks to be told
“you missed a spot”. These details, however,
are part of pinup history, and quite an
idiosyncratic part, at that. I hope you enjoy
this quirky look at fine pinup art.
#10 Alberto Vargas’ Pointed
Nails
Alberto Vargas’ work is practically
flawless. It’s skillfully executed and
unfathomably beautiful. Vargas has many
fetishes, but this tiny detail is so
idiosyncratic and mysterious, and it repeats
every single time! Pointed nails are in every
Vargas image, without exception! What can
this mean? Is it a
catwoman thing? Is it an esthetic
preference? Is Vargas flirting with danger?
What do you think?
Sexy astronauts, alluring aliens, and
sassy space warriors are a mainstay in pinup
culture. Taking erotic fantasy out of this
world.
Jules Verne's 1865 novel From the
Earth to the Moon captured many people’s
imagination, all around the world. But it
wasn’t until a hundred years later, that the
Apollo 11 would land on the moon and really
fuel pop culture. It’s easy to find fantastic
images of sexy aliens, today. TV and the
cinema have made it popular with movies and
shows such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Total
Recall and many more.
I’d like to take a more
chronological-as-possible look at the pinup
space fantasy, because I think, all you pinup
lovers will be pleasantly surprised.
Plus-size pinups are a niche within a
niche. It's hard to see a potential of growth
outside of the plus-size fetish community. I
would like to propose otherwise, by
showcasing a few plus-size pinup
artists.
Searching for plus-size pinups
is (as in many other pinup sub-niches) tough
and yields little results. Even more
discouraging was finding the following short
conversation on Yahoo Answers, in the
begining stages of research.
Q: Who are some of the greatest
plus-size pin-up models of today?
A1: Look on myspace, and you'll find
plenty. the thing is, pin-up models, plus
size or otherwise, aren't really part of a
booming industry outside of fetishists,
Betty Page fans and tattoo conventions. Can
you name a contemporary pin-up model
(outside of Dita Von-Teese) at all?
Plus size pin-ups especially are a
non-issue - I can't name any because there
aren't any famous ones. Again, you'll find
hundreds of women calling themselves plus
size models on myspace - so you can check
them out there, but the majority of them
are not actual models.
A2:Are you talking about waist line or bust
size?
Not a huge market for fat pin-ups. Pun
intended.
With the advent of the internet the market
for modern pin-ups has become huge,
de-valued, international, and fragmented. I
can't say who is the queen of today's
pin-up market. 99% of pin-ups are viewed
eletronically and never make it to print.
Just 10 years ago it was the complete
opposite.
Certainly there is no modern Betty Page of
any size.
When comics artists draw women they
unleash some incredible fantasies. These
fantasies have read the minds of millions of
boys and girls across the world (and no,
that’s hardly something to worry about
).
Comic book artists
are known for overemphasizing the female
form. The comic book pinups are
inhumanly structured and impossibly
costumed and that’s what makes them so
much fun. This is a tribute to some good
artists and some bad girls, taking The
Pinup Shop Blog to the darker side of
pinups.
