Earth Day Special: Eco-Sexy Pinups and Ecosexuals

<< Last #212 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Racialicious: Who’s a Pretty Burlesque Princess Now

#213 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Women in Modern Art Next >>

One of my favorite days is coming up, this week and I’d like to celebrate The Pinup Blog way. Happy Earth Day everybody!

Every so often I hear the nonsensical and chauvinistic claim that female environmental activists are “grimy”, “dreadlocked” and “hairy”. While I argue that dreadlocks are lovely and can be just as kept as any other hairstyle, I also argue that leg shaving is my last pitfall as a feminist and I seriously hope, to one day, get over the need to moderate my body in order to be “socially acceptable”. “Grimy”… well, see how you look after 2 years up a tree Winking Today’s ladies are gorgeous, inventive and environmentally conscientious, and some are willing to sacrifice a lot for their cause. Proving (yet again) that green is sexy.

#202 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Édouard Chimot - 1920's Pinups

I just happened to stumble on a blog post focusing on French print artist, Édouard Chimot. Chimot is mainly known for his work during the 1920’s, such as this one. Much of his work depicts the glamorous and depraved city life. You can tell that the fashions are just transitioning from victorian to 20th century. Fascinating pinups with economic lines. Look him up!

Fashion History: The Collar Fetish in Pinup Art

The Collar: Innocent fashion accessory, or bondage gear?

From the most innocent piece of jewelry to the most fetishist admission of submission, collars are actually quite common in pinup art. Today we’ll look at a few examples of collars in cheesecake and try too see if their function and concept changes.

The Innocent Accessory in Classic Pinups

Most probably originating from Victorian fashions, the collar, better known as the choker (political correctness gone awry?), has been fashionable all through the 19th century. Many classic pinups from the 1940’s and 50’s feature this elegant, little accessory:

The good folks at American Apparel bring you a very retro Halloween 2009. Sexy in Suits - Androgynous Pinup History

I’ve covered the wonders of men in stockings, before. Now let’s discover the magic that is women in three-piece suits.

Suits for women would come and go throughout history. When women dress in suits they often don’t do it to look like a man, but to project strength. Our perceptions of masculinity, as a synonym of strength, is so deeply embedded that a unique thrill tingles within us, when we witness a woman in men’s clothing. Our curiosity peaks, especially if she balances the masculine facade with a feminine one.

Of Corsets and Pinups - A Fashion History Lesson

One piece of clothing that drove women to self mutilation. THE symbol of the social subjugation of women, for generations and yet we still love it. So much so, that even after it died, we revived it several times.

Women’s clothing have always been controversial. Trying to balance comfort and beauty has never been the goal of top designers. Corsets, today, are a choice and a fashion statement. They also don’t necessarily mean body modification, by way of cinching the waist, although some go for this unhealthy practice. As a wise commentator said, on the YouTube page of the video to the left:

Very sensual, but after a point it becomes grotesque. Part of the art is knowing how far to go and have it still look good, not deformed.

Palestinian Pinups - Not Your Exotic, Not Your Erotic

Palestinian women come in all shapes, colors and sizes, with different beliefs, different religions and different ways of life. This isn’t a well known fact, yet. In this article I’d like to look at the beauty from within as well as from without.

I can’t ignore the fact that I’m Israeli and pro-Palestinian and the reactions this article may bring my way (or just this sentence). Nevertheless, it’s important to me to create a bridge, where walls are being biult- around Palestinians and Arabs and Muslims in general. Most important to me, is to show off, to people of the West, the beauty and individuality of each woman I feature. You can’t group Palestinians into crude stereotypes, as you can’t group any other group of people. If you do it, you miss out on the beautiful diversity of the world.

Earth Day Special - Environmentally Conscientious Pinups

Sexy pinups demonstrate environmental awareness- an Earth Day special on The Pinup Blog.

It’s not easy to find conscientious pinups, especially in the environmental department. But it’s already looking better than last year. This Earth Day, I’ve got a great list of green beauties for you; From animal rights, to energy conservation.

Ride a Bike!

Alternative transportation is not just about electric cars. One of TreeHugger’s (the green social network) favorite pastimes is to spot celebrities opting for the bike. This slideshow captures 13 sexy starlets, riding their bikes.

Another interesting project is the TyK (Thought You Knew) and CWHC (Chicago Women’s Health Center) collaboration. This project is actually geared toward healthcare, but it’s run by a group of Chicago ladies that love to ride and I thought may be appropriate. With the help of CWHC, Tyk has created a beautiful retro pinup calender with the theme of bicycles. Following through with TreeHugger’s thesis that just supporting the notion that bikes are sexy, promotes this alternative transportation method, I put a spotlight on these cycling beauties.

1990’s Super Pinup Models

Chiseled beauty, a business oriented mind and a buzzability is what the 1990’s super models brought into the pinup world.

When a model becomes widely known, on a first name basis, she’s a super model. The knowing of the name, makes that name into a brand name. This brand name is worth millions. The 1990’s would be the highlight of super models. Before Paris Hilton there would be Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell.

Geisha Pinups - Capturing Western Imagination

Firing up imaginations from the East to the West, The Pinup Blog is proud to present: Geisha Pinups

Geishas have always been shrouded in mystic, in Western eyes. If she was doing her job right, in Japanese eyes, as well:

“Their purpose being to entertain their customer, be it by reciting verse, playing musical instruments, or engaging in light conversation. Geisha engagements may include flirting with men and playful innuendos; however, clients know that nothing more can be expected. In a social style that is uniquely Japanese, men are amused by the illusion of that which is never to be.” ~ Wikipedia

There are hundreds, if not thousand, images of Geishas, all over the internet. Let’s take a look at the trends.

For Love of the Pinup!

by Jaime Caudill

Valentine's Day...love and such....I could write about that....but everyone does, so I'm writing about the Love of Pinups.

Much more interesting than talking about, if you're going to get your girlfriend, boyfriend, husband or wife a box of candy or flowers, or something just ridiculous, like a new mop or something. Hell, just buy him/her a pinup and give em some of that extra special lovin' and believe me, they will be happy. In fact, I'm giving my husband a Pinup of none other than myself for Valentine's Day....by Tali Shapiro (You rock, Tali!) ....and he's going to love it.

Lately I have been doing some research for my own website. The subject of my website, of course: Pinups. In the process of researching I have found out so much and learned of countless artists who do pinup work. Pinups are my very favorite type of Art. Give me Gil Elvgren over Leonardo de Vinci anyday. I know a lot of people will disagree, but that's just me and I like what I like and I Love pinups, hence this topic for Valentines day.

So, back to the subject of my research, I have also realized that just about everyone loves pinups....because there are so many different topics pinups can be linked to. Whether you like fashion, cars, motorcycles, vintage art, superheros, sports, cooking, animals, pretty much anything you can think of, there is a pinup website about it or at least a pinup portrait related to your topic of interest. Or, you know what, if you just have a fetish...there is a pinup related to your fetish somewhere. I can find it for you if you don't believe me Winking While I was hard at work researching the topic I love most: Pinups, I came across countless websites that show the diversity of pinups and the broad range of those who love them. There are pinups everywhere! Pinups are taking over the world Happy Everyone Loves pinups!

Stylish First Ladies - Pinups in the White House

From Jackie O to Michelle Obama, first ladies are stylish, formidable women. Here’s a look at stylish first ladies - pinups in the white house.

First Ladies are usually not regarded by their sexuality as their job is of real substance. Most of them weren’t beautiful, or fashionable (a fact that would change with the coming of the television into every American home). But some were, And others had fantastic photographic moments.

Martha Washington - The First Lady

Wife of George Washington, Martha Washington was the first First Lady. She was the first to define the job and make it a meaningful one. We may be used to the white-haired matronly image of Mrs. Washington, but this painting reveals a graceful and proud woman with her best frocks on. Defiantly a formidable role- model for First Ladies to come.

Pinup Pop - Glamor Girls of the Music Industry

<< Last The Pinup Shop Update: Supporting the Troops the Pinup Way!

#74 The Bi-Weekly Bombshell: GOP Pin-Ups Next >>

From Marilyn Monroe to Christina Aguilera, The music world has brought out some of the biggest pop pinup icons.

More than any other industry, the music industry is known for some outrageous costuming. It isn’t customary for a woman, today, to dress up as a 1950’s calender pinup, but pop stars all over want to. I say let’em and see what a beautiful world this could be Winking !

Marilyn Monroe - The Icon

Marilyn Monroe was mainly a movie star, but we all remember her for her delightful singing voice, as well. What she wore, in her time, was really typical glamor wear, but this woman set trends that would be copied decades later. I think this proves it’s not the dress that makes the woman, but the woman who makes the dress. Back in the 1950’s and today women everywhere want to copy the look, and some of them are the biggest pop starlets around.

Mdolla caught my attention with this short pictorial of Michelle Obama’s fashion sense. A poodle dress, a pencil skirt, ¾ pants and other thrilling pieces of vintage are all the rage. They’ll give you that 1950’s flare, wether you’re wearing garters or not.

Pinups in Leather - Fetish Magazines

Leather, bondage and femdom make a great setting for pinup photography. Take a sneak peak into pinup subculture.

A great place to find pinups is the fetish magazine. You may be surprised, but the fetish magazine originates in the sweet ole’ 1960’s. You might also be surprised to know that these magazines are aimed to be erotic rather than pornographic. Fetishes aren’t for everybody, Wikipedia says it beautifully:

Much of the content in fetish magazines is baffling to people who do not share the particular fetishes discussed and depicted.

But if you never try- you never know. Winking
