#213 The
Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Women in Modern Art
Next
>>
One of my favorite days is coming up,
this week and I’d like to celebrate The Pinup
Blog way. Happy Earth Day
everybody!
Every so often I
hear the nonsensical and chauvinistic
claim that female environmental
activists are “grimy”, “dreadlocked” and
“hairy”. While I argue that dreadlocks
are lovely and can be just as kept as
any other hairstyle, I also argue that
leg shaving is my last pitfall as a
feminist and I seriously hope, to one
day, get over the need to moderate my
body in order to be “socially
acceptable”. “Grimy”… well, see how you
look after 2 years up a tree Today’s ladies are
gorgeous, inventive and environmentally
conscientious, and some are willing to
sacrifice a lot for their cause. Proving
(yet
again) that green is sexy.
“Fool” is surprisingly a very common word
in love songs. This year, the first of April
takes a serious turn with 10 gorgeous and
diverse pinups that sing about fools.
Today’s top 10 April Fools pinups have little
in common. They come in all shapes, colors
and sizes and sing in various styles and
genres. All of them, however, have phenomenal
talent and all will be singing songs that
have the word “fool” in them. Enjoy the show!
#10 Aretha Franklin - Runnin’ Out of
Fools
We start with the 1964 classic, Runnin’ Out
of Fools, with a young and sweet, but very
mature Aretha Franklin. It’s always
fascinating to see the alternative images
sold at the time to the public and better
yet, through an incredible performance, like
this one.
The new year is upon us and so are the
calender girls!
Calenders are the
traditional display method for pinups. What’s
new in 2010? Many good causes and a lot of
good art. Ladies and gents, I give you The
Pinup Blog’s top 10 pinup calenders!
#10 Vintage Cowgirl Pinups Wall
Calendar
CafePress is full of pinup calenders and it
was hard to choose between them. We start our
list off with this
themed vintage cowgirl calender. Each
image is a collage, mixing up classic pinup
cowgirl with typography and some vintage
ornaments. Simple and sweet.
Nothing makes a celebration like music,
and no Christmas is complete without a sexy,
stripping Santa!
They are gorgeous, they
dance, they sing, they strut and occasionally
strip. It’s The Pinup Blog’s top 10 sexy
musical pinups!
#10 The Caburlesque Kittens do Sweet
Candy
The
Caburlesque Kittens are a burlesque
group from San Diego County. Keeping it
clean, they’re almost a family show and
perfect for some light Christmas
dancing. They also get Pinup Blog props
for injecting a little diversity into
the classic Christmas pinup fantasy.
Loads of vintage fun at
Retrospace (newest
addition to the sidebar). Be it music,
television, movies, or those silly ads
from way back when, Retrospace covers it
all. Good humored and very diverse, go
have a look, and enjoy the special
Christmasy surroundings, too!

Lauren Moore creates
these meticulously designed and diverse
cartoon pinups, which just happen to
make fantastic stocking stuffers. So
keep them in mind, because I know you’re
already doing your Christmas shopping in
the US. For your convenience this
holiday season, you can find Lauren’s
Hellcat Honeys here and
also here.

It’s a tough
search, but somebody’s got to do it! For some
reason, turkeys are not the typical animal to
accompany a pinup image. Nevertheless, I’ve
managed to find some pro-turkey holiday
cheesecake!
Classic Pinups- A Vegan Peek at
Sexualized Speciesism
I thought we’d
first take a look at the problem. Yes, they
are gorgeous, and girl-next-doorsy, and
goddamnit- that’s Marilyn Monroe! But I can
only hope that the classic pinups with this
message have gone extinct:
Is
that a carcass on your platter,
Umm… Is this
theLeave
it to
Lady, You could be Marilyn
or are you just happy to see me?
Turkeyset?
Monroe, for all I care, just
get the gun outta my face!
Halloween is coming up and it’s time to
get horrifically sexy with a look at the
pinups of horror television (and one movie).
And ask a few questions about what it all
means?
Lust and fear come
together in the horror entertainment
industry. Basically, where there’s a
scary monster, you’ll find a beautiful
lady, making for a good star-crossed
lovers tale. Many times, however, you’ll
find the lady is actually the monster,
claiming archaic ideas that a woman’s
lust is a dark desire that will consume
you. All this and so much more
allegories, in The Pinup Blog’s
Halloween special.
The good folks at
American
Apparel bring you a very retro
Halloween 2009. Costumes look comfy, sexy
and affordable and could probably be
easily converted to snazzy street clothes
after the after party. I especially love
this simple Cabaret costume. If you’ve got
the legs for it, go for it!

Father’s day is coming up and in that
context, it’s a great time to talk about that
ever-so-taboo fetish:
Lolita.
Nabokov wasn’t really talking about
pedophilia, but the shock value seems to
overshadow the existential value of the
novel, Lolita. The cultural significance is
found between the pages of the dictionary:
“Main Entry: Lo·li·ta
Pronunciation: \lō-ˈlē-tə\
Function: noun
Etymology: from Lolita, character in the
novel Lolita (1955) by Vladimir Nabokov
Date: 1959
: a precociously seductive girl”
And also found on celluloid (as seen above).
Most people find it disconcerting that grown
men may feel attracted to young ladies. Or
that grown women act like little girls, in
order to attract grown men. As a result,
culture has given rise to some interesting
phenomena.
Repulsed by portrayal of women as used in
Cinco de Mayo ecards, The Pinup Blog went on
a hunt for Sexy Mexican culture with self
respect.
It’s a little hard
to balance my feminism with my love of
pinups, but sometimes I’ve got to say
“no”. Usually when a holiday pops up, I
just Google “sexy Christmas/Halloween”
to start my search. The results for
“sexy Cinco De Mayo” kind of grossed me
out. I’d expect stereotypical images
that identify a culture, like the
glittery myspace retro pinup to the
left- the attention to detail (in what
must have been the original vintage
piece) shows a love and respect towards
it. But there’s a thin red line, between
that and the booty
shaking, “booz me up” image, next to
it. So I decided to celebrate Cinco de
Mayo by celebrating some beautiful,
respectful Mexican pinups.
Sexy pinups demonstrate environmental
awareness- an Earth Day special on The Pinup
Blog.
It’s not easy to find conscientious
pinups, especially in the environmental
department. But it’s already looking better
than
last year. This Earth Day, I’ve got a
great list of green beauties for you; From
animal rights, to energy conservation.
Another interesting project is the TyK (Thought
You Knew) and CWHC (Chicago Women’s
Health Center) collaboration. This
project is actually geared toward
healthcare, but it’s run by a group of
Chicago ladies that love to ride and I
thought may be appropriate. With the
help of CWHC, Tyk has created a
beautiful retro pinup calender with the
theme of bicycles. Following through
with TreeHugger’s thesis that just
supporting the notion that bikes are
sexy, promotes this alternative
transportation method, I put a spotlight
on these cycling beauties.
They’re hispanic, BBW, male,
anthropomorphic and they have one thing in
common- They’re all in a bunny suit!
Easter brings upon
me a message of hope, this year. Out I
went to fetch you some Easter bunnies
and to my pleasant surprise I found a
world of diversities. All sexy, all
bunnies, in all sizes, shapes and
colors. It’s the diverse universe of the
Easter bunny fetish- as long as you got
long ears- you’re in!
Green is not an easy color to wear, but
these bombshells make it look easy. Avoid the
pinch with sexy green dress!
The
annual St. Patrick’s pinup countdown at
The Pinup Blog is on. After a long
search, I found some fantastic green
clad bombshells, for your viewing
pleasure. Wether cartoon, 3D or
celebrity, there’s something for
everyone. So grab a beer and lets see if
you can count down from 10!
#10 CafePress’ St. Patrick’s
Pinups
Cafepress is always stocked up for
the holidays and always has a few pinup girls
in store. St. Patrick’s is no exception. A
variety of styles- all in green.
This fiery super woman is a mild mannered
mother of four and loving wife, who wanted to
give her hubby a super sexy gift for
Valentine’s Day. Together, we created
a
portrait of a strong, loving woman.
Today’s women are truly super women,
juggling a career, a family and looking
amazing as they do it.

Valentine's Day...love and such....I
could write about that....but everyone does,
so I'm writing about the Love of
Pinups.
Much more
interesting than talking about, if
you're going to get your girlfriend,
boyfriend, husband or wife a box of
candy or flowers, or something just
ridiculous, like a new mop or something.
Hell, just buy him/her a pinup and give
em some of that extra special lovin' and
believe me, they will be happy. In fact,
I'm giving my husband a Pinup of none
other than myself for Valentine's
Day....by Tali Shapiro (You rock, Tali!)
....and he's going to love it.
Lately I have been doing some research for my
own website. The subject of my website, of
course: Pinups. In the process of researching
I have found out so much and learned of
countless artists who do pinup work. Pinups
are my very favorite type of Art. Give me Gil
Elvgren over Leonardo de Vinci anyday. I know
a lot of people will disagree, but that's
just me and I like what I like and I Love
pinups, hence this topic for Valentines day.
So, back to the subject of my research, I
have also realized that just about everyone
loves pinups....because there are so many
different topics pinups can be linked to.
Whether you like fashion, cars, motorcycles,
vintage art, superheros, sports, cooking,
animals, pretty much anything you can think
of, there is a pinup website about it or at
least a pinup portrait related to your topic
of interest. Or, you know what, if you just
have a fetish...there is a pinup related to
your fetish somewhere. I can find it for you
if you don't believe me While I was hard at work
researching the topic I love most:
Pinups, I came across countless websites
that show the diversity of pinups and
the broad range of those who love them.
There are pinups everywhere! Pinups are
taking over the world Everyone Loves pinups!
Martin Luther King day was yesterday, so
what a great time to commemorate one of the
great black women in history: Eartha
Kitt!
Many losses for the
pinup world, this year.
First it was the mythological Bettie Page
and on the 25th of December it was
the legendary Eartha Kitt. It seems that my
tribute article came right on the week
commemorating Martin Luther King, which is
just too perfect. So instead of another
eulogy (which you already know I hate doing)
let’s talk about the awe-inspiring Eartha
Kitt’s true contributions to
society.
You love them and I cant argue with you!
For your enjoyment; It’s the top 10 articles
of The Pinup Blog!
What a year! I
started The Pinup Blog with small ambition
and never dreamed it would get this far or
this big. I owe it all to my pinup loving
readers, such as yourself So in honor of you and the
new year, here are the top 10 most
popular articles at The Pinup Blog.
#10 Double Happiness - Retro Pinup
Twins
Maybe it’s the
unbelievable odds that there’s not one,
but two of this gorgeous girl. Maybe
it’s just about the manas e troie.
Whatever it is, twins are one of the
most popular sexual fetishes.
Beefcake searches always leave me
wanting, especially at Christmas time. Could
it be that only gay men consume
beefcake?
Last year I
nominated the
top 10 Christmas neo pinups. I thought
I’d see what beefcake had to offer in that
category. It’s a short list this year. As
always, a search for beefcake is much
tougher, as they seem to be scarce (in
relation to their female counter part).
Always leaving me asking that age old
question: Where’s the beef?!
I’ll start off with this excruciating Shawn
Connery, to the left. I don’t know what the
hell the man was thinking, but there you have
it. I know this isn’t a Christmas themed
beefcake, per se, but he’s so festive in that
red fetish get-up... Just look at him as my
Christmas gift to you.
Long black hair, deep brown eyes and a
dark complexion are the qualities I’m looking
for this Thanksgiving.
Last year, I
collected (quite unsuccessfully, so thanks
for everybody that pitched in )
Thanksgiving pilgrim pinups. This year,
in the name of diversity, I’d like to focus
on the Native American pinups.
#10 Redworks Creations - Native American
graphics for MySpace
It seems like each
list I make has a bit of MySpace in it.
And it seems like MySpace has many
niches to cater to. The Native American
niche is alive and kicking with some
great images and a lot of glitter at
Redworks
Creations. If you look deep into the
site, you can find some kickass Native
American pinups.
‘Tis the season to be spooky. I got some
lovely Goth Halloween pinups for
you!
It’s The Pinup Blog’s second
Halloween and I scoured the Goth communities
to find you the charm and sexiness that are
Goth neo pinups. They’re pierced, tatooed and
fetishistic. Walk the dark depth of the
internet with me… Wahahahahaha!
Darkgoth
Darkgoth is a
wonderful Goth photographer. Her
creations are bold and at times
explicit, but always beautiful and
original. Most images are fetish and are
specifically aimed to that crowd.
As many of you know, one of my favorite
pinups involves such senseless brutality,
Elvgren's The Bear Facts (under the Enoch
Bolles pinup). This
is my take on The Bear Facts, and the
role of Polar Bears in pinup art, in the
21st century.
Click on the item of your choice and Say "no"
to the bear-rug.

I love getting
tip-offs from my readers. I received this
one, from Ariel, to my email box:
Hello,
I love your website! I too am obsessed and
enthralled by pinup! Anyway, even though
this may be a bit too late (or really
early) to be helpful, I know you were
looking really hard for different kinds of
St. Patrick's Day, Easter, and Thanksgiving
pinups. I know of some really good ones
that you missed on your list that I thought
you might be interested in. Anyway, here
they are:
It’s Bunny Mania at The Pinup Blog!
Easter leaves me no choice but to go bunny
hunting across the web. I bring you the
finest bunny bombshells: Be vewy vewy
quiet…
The Holidays are coming and it’s time for
a good, old fashioned count-down of the 10
best St. Patrick’s Day Pinups. Put your green
shades on and have a sexy St. Patrick’s
day.
The old cheesecake masters didn’t
really use to draw anything special for St.
Patrick’s Day. I could have listed all the
pinups dressed in green, I could find, but
green was a popular color, back then. So I
pulled up my sleeves and went out to find
specifically-made St. Patrick’s pinups. It’s
not sophisticated, but it’s a delight.
A few good months
ago I wrote an article about
pinups and diversity. A prominent
shortage of African American pinups bugged
me. So I was pretty ecstatic when I was
contact by my current model. Black and
voluptuous, she made The Pinup Shop truly
diverse.
In the spirit of diversity and the up-coming
St. Patrick's Day, I thought I'd retaliate to
all the "Kiss
Me I'm Irish" T-shirts on CafePress
and give the non-Irish a chance to be
loved.
Love it or hate it, Valentine's day is
coming up. Be prepared with this bitter-sweet
cheesecake.
Renee Gannon, editor of Lesbiatopia, a joint
blog for queer women by queer women, came to
me right before Valentine's day. We both
thought it'd be appropriate to take a fresh
look at a classic theme.

Tattoos, piercing and brightly dyed hair
is what the neo-pinup girl is all about.
Christmas time is a time of giving and I want
to give some of my favorite neo-pinups a
tribute. Merry Christmas!
The pinup
revival is not about doing it like Vargas.
Today’s pinups are only a reminder of what
pinups used to look like. They have their own
special edge, with the tattoos, the piercing
and the brightly dyed hair. Maybe, in fifty
years- when the next pinup revival comes,
instead of the Betty Page hair-cut, they’ll
all have pink or red hair and body paint?
I was really hoping on a top 10 list of
pinups, for Thanksgiving. Once again, my
dreams of listing have been brutally
shattered by the sad realities: Thanks giving
isn't sexy enough for pinups. There are
almost no Thanksgiving bombshells, out
there.
Yes, I love doing lists for this
blog, because it gives me a chance to dive
into a massive search for retro girlie art,
in Google. I ogle sexy, half naked women, for
hours on end, under the pretext of work.
(jealous much ) This Thanksgiving, my
work has been unproductive.
A Pinup Pioneer
I have managed to
find one
resilient artist at Cafepress,
who made an effort to give thanksgiving
it's share of cheesecake.
Halloween is huge for pinups (sadly the
correlation between the commercialization of
holidays and the growth of pop culture is
undeniable). So I set out to find this
Halloween's latest cheesecake
attractions.
Happy Halloween Everybody!
For this Halloween, I thought I'd celebrate
with my top 10 favorite Halloween web pinups.
From costumes, to art, to photography, the
web holds endless possibilities for the
Halloween pinup lover:
Are you a pinup lover? Do you find yourself
mysteriously drawn to this retro girlie art? Do
you find yourself at the computer, at night,
scouring the internet for more pictures? You're
not alone.
Hi, my name is Tali Shapiro and I'm a pinup
addict
