#213 The
Bi-Weekly Bombshell: Women in Modern Art
Next
>>
One of my favorite days is coming up,
this week and I’d like to celebrate The Pinup
Blog way. Happy Earth Day
everybody!
Every so often I
hear the nonsensical and chauvinistic
claim that female environmental
activists are “grimy”, “dreadlocked” and
“hairy”. While I argue that dreadlocks
are lovely and can be just as kept as
any other hairstyle, I also argue that
leg shaving is my last pitfall as a
feminist and I seriously hope, to one
day, get over the need to moderate my
body in order to be “socially
acceptable”. “Grimy”… well, see how you
look after 2 years up a tree Today’s ladies are
gorgeous, inventive and environmentally
conscientious, and some are willing to
sacrifice a lot for their cause. Proving
(yet
again) that green is sexy.
Flickr proves again
and again to be a source of wonder.
During my Bi-Weekly search for
eye-popping bombshells and gorgeous
pinups I stumbled upon Tiny Titian’s
photostream, which includes a
set devoted to pinups. Mishella
Vendetta is the neo-pinup model and you’ll
love her color shots, where her bright
red-to-pink hair matches her lipstick.

In dramatic scene, tough and even evil,
it’s the sexy Easter bunny fantasy gone
awry.
One of the most
common fantasies in cyber space, the
sexy bunny, has endless Google results.
While the typical sexy Easter bunny is
just a poster girl, on the sweet side
and often a Playboy cliche, I’ve run
into a more fetishistic bunny, this
year, which I’m more than glad to share
with you.
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is Ryan
McGinley’s latest collection of portraits.
While sex is definitely an issue that’s
evident in McGinley’s work, there are many
human issues that it evokes. Everybody Knows
This Is Nowhere is a beautiful collection
that shows the diversity of young people,
rarely shown in the mainstream channels.

The “exotic” fantasy has always existed
in the pinup realm and long before. The Pinup
Blog takes a look at the social aspects of
one of its favorite fantasies.
I love the diversity that’s offered in the
pinup world. Beautiful images are produced
with the assistance of cultural symbols in
clothing and accessories and, of course, the
diversity of the models themselves. I touched
on this subject in
my article about Palestinian pinups.
Rather than repeat what could have made a
great opening for this article, I’d like to
start with this whimsical, clever and
beautiful young woman, Natalie, who’s totally
an “exotic” pinup girl of her times.
Just a random find.
A picture of Marilyn Monroe (labeled
“Marilyn 3” ) that caught my eye, on a
smashing fashion blog, Hello
Dollface. For a moment, it reminded me
of what I love so much about pinups, and I
thought I’d share. Enjoy!

extraordinarily, but once she steps into

irresistible! I, for one, am ecstatic

Not exactly cheesecake and not exactly
beefcake, but definitely sexy! It’s time to
feast your eyes on the butch pinup.
Feeling comfortable
in your own skin is the number one
ingredient for sex appeal. Not every
woman feels sexy in heels and lipstick,
and as a result, not every woman
is sexy in
heels and lipstick. This week, The Pinup
Blog takes a look at the diverse and
beautiful butch women, who prefer men’s
shorts over panties, and sideburns over
curlers.
I can’t believe I
don’t have Little
Darling’s Pinups for Pitbulls on my
sidebar! This changes right now.
Professional neo pinup, Little Darling, is
a dedicated animal rights activist and has
founded Pinups for Pitbulls in order to
give special care to an especially
discriminated breed:
“Through creating an annual pinup calendar,
selling other merchandise, and throwing
events, Pinups for Pitbulls, Inc. raises
money and awareness to benefit the health and
welfare of this largely misunderstood breed.
the goal is to restore the former image of
the American Pit Bull Terrier as war Hero,
helper, nanny, companion and friend. Pinups
for Pitbulls also seeks to ban BSL,
(breed-specific-legislation), and to lobby
against dog fighting, puppy mills, and
cruelty to pit bulls. Little Darling believes
that public education combinedwith the
pro-pit bull testimonies and images of
beautiful, strong women (especially using the
All-American pinup image) will help to
counterbalance the stigma that the media and
animal abusers have placed on pit bulls and
bully-breeds.”

The Pinup Blog is ecstatic to create a
tribute to the Gibson Girl. And it’s about
time, too!
By the end of the
19th
century, Charles Dana Gibson conjured up
the “Gibson Girl”. The Gibson Girl, in a
sense, was a byproduct of Gibson’s
satire work, but her beauty overpowered
the American audience and she soon
became the first national standard for
feminine beauty, in America. Her
distinct style made her iconic, and her
signature big hair and hourglass figure
are easily recognizable.
The Mormons are at it again! Chad Hardy,
the man who brought us Mormon beefcake (and
was excommunicated for it), isn’t neglecting
our hardy appetite. This year, in addition to
Mormons Exposed, he brings us the retro Hot
Mormon Muffins calendar. Campy, but tasteful,
and for- not one but- two good causes! Other
than raising awareness about the diversity of
Mormons, some of the proceeds of the
calenders goes to breast cancer research.
That’s another calender to add to
the list this very sexy year, so have a
good one!

In 2007, Tendance

with force, the come-back of the
neo-retro pin-up girls style.” As an
opener, they supplied this retro-esque

that 2010 will continue the neo-retro

The new year is upon us and so are the
calender girls!
Calenders are the
traditional display method for pinups. What’s
new in 2010? Many good causes and a lot of
good art. Ladies and gents, I give you The
Pinup Blog’s top 10 pinup calenders!
#10 Vintage Cowgirl Pinups Wall
Calendar
CafePress is full of pinup calenders and it
was hard to choose between them. We start our
list off with this
themed vintage cowgirl calender. Each
image is a collage, mixing up classic pinup
cowgirl with typography and some vintage
ornaments. Simple and sweet.
How does feminism,
environmentalism and
community-mindedness find its way into a
pinup calendar? Ask the women of Country
Mamas 2010 Calendar:
Becky Grant, CounterPunch business manager,
writes: How in the world does a pin-up
calendar not perpetuate the problem of overly
simplistic, generic female roles? I asked
myself the same question when I found myself
immersed in a sudsy bucket in a polka-dot
bikini, because it was my intention to show
moms embracing the everyday activities of our
country lives and what do you know? Not only
do we triumph over grittier tasks, we also
make up a fine calendar that demonstrates
well the charm, grace and beauty of life in
Petrolia. We’ve already denounced the fashion
industry with our clothing swaps (known in
these parts as Naked Lady Parties). We’ve
taken on the bureaucracies that try to
control us and their ridiculous policies by
schooling our children the way we want them
schooled, creating environments for them that
allow them to become community minded,
peaceful, compassionate and creative adults.
We are activists against corporate America by
growing our own food, building our own homes,
and living a conscientious, sustainable life.
We have abandoned the American dream for our
own dreams, borne out of our own unique,
diverse, self-determined identities. Buy a
calendar and help support our local causes!

Shameless Photography
has nothing to be ashamed of. Other than
creating beautiful and whimsical retro
pinups, they also create a positive
atmosphere in the pinup world, with the
diversity of their models and an
empowering attitude:
“In a culture where we're constantly
bombarded by images, messages, and
standards designed to make us feel
inadequate and insecure about our faces
and our bodies, I aim to create a space
where women can feel safe, beautiful, and
empowered. Using makeup, lighting,
and photography, I create images that are
part fantasy, part reality -- and
entirely gorgeous. To become a
fantasy -- and to know that you can do so
whenever you want -- is a powerful thing.
No billboard model, no advertising agency
can own the realm of fantasy -- we all
do.”
On with the revolution!

Grassroots third wave feminism manifest
in the revival of the Roller Derby.
Pinup, today, is not
just an art, but a lifestyle. With it’s
own brands of fashion, music, art and of
course, sports. Roller Derby, the choice
sport for those living this lifestyle,
is much more than a bunch of skimpily
outfitted young women bashing away at
each other. It’s a place for women to
organize, express themselves, and take
part in some seriously badass contact
sports. If they can be campy while doing
it- all the better!

goddamnit- that’s Marilyn Monroe! But I can
only hope that the classic pinups with this

Sexy female
pin ups have been part of the Sci-Fi
fantasy genre since it’s creation.
Monthly magazine in the 30’s 40’s and
50’s feathered sexy half dressed woman
on their covers, usually fighting some
sort of horrible monster.
For most of the 20thcentury, the
sci-fi fantasy genre was male dominated, and
female roles were usually confined to the
generic female roles- the sexy babe or the
damsel in distress. While Tolkien and Asimov
had some more feminist female roles-
likeEowynand Dr.Susan
Calvin, those
characters where few and far in between.
Most female characters where for show, the
love interest of the brave male hero, the
sexy temptress etc.

It’s my favorite day
of the year, again! Nope, not Earth
Day- it’sBlog Action
Day! A day of
concentrated activism for bloggers all
over the world, and I’m ecstatic to be
one of over 13,000 registered blogs.
Last year we concentrated our collective
efforts on
poverty, the year
before that- the first Blog Action Day- was
generally about the
environment. This year, we
deal with climate change:
From my
environmental search, two years ago, the
pinup world seemed almost oblivious to
the environment, but this year, I was
elated to discover the gorgeous and
diverseVegan
Vixens(newest on the
sidebar). Self-dubbed eco-entertainers,
the Vixens work to educate about
environmental issues such as animal
welfare, the vegan lifestyle, and climate
change. And they do it all through
burlesque and pinup styled photoshoots!
For you eco-pinup
lovers, Here’s a behind the scenes look at
their calender shoot:
Breast cancer isn’t a very lighthearted

It’s actually more rare than you
think. The teacher fetish is a
classic fantasy, but when you look
for classic images, you might be
surprised.
The teacher
fetish is one of those natural
occurrences. Young boys, in
their teens, won’t be able to
ignore the refreshing sight of a
good looking educator. If a boy
was lucky enough to actually
have an attractive teacher, odds
are he’ll remember her fondly,
for years to come. Thus the
teacher fetish is born. I made
every effort to avoid porn and
keep it classy. It’s a
challenge, but someone’s got to
do it.
We’ll start off with a vintage
soundtrack, to get you in the mood:
Frankie Avalon’s Teacher’s Pet:
Suits for women
would come and go throughout
history. When women dress in
suits they often don’t do it to
look like a man, but to project
strength. Our perceptions of
masculinity, as a synonym of
strength, is so deeply embedded
that a unique thrill tingles
within us, when we witness a
woman in men’s clothing. Our
curiosity peaks, especially if
she balances the masculine
facade with a feminine one.

“Since the dawn of time, the
promise of our charms has been used
to urge our men into battle. We are
called up to rally behind our troops,
